Hocking Hills Golf

“The Scottish Links at Glenlaurel” is a replica of the links-style courses built as far back as 400 years in the British Isles.

Historically, courses varied from five to twenty-five holes. The famed Old Course at St. Andrews played for a century with twelve holes, then was expanded to twenty-two, and finally reduced to eighteen which was adapted as the norm. Those earliest golf courses were not built but rather they were “discovered” as golfers selected small flat areas to serve as “greens,” many of which were pure sand without grass. In America, even North Carolina’s famed Pinehurst Country Club started in 1894 with sand greens and nine holes, and didn’t get grass greens until 40 years later.

Glenlaurel built a links-style Scottish golf course that is unlike any other Hocking Hills golf course you’ve ever experienced! World-renowned golf architect, Dr. Michael Hurdzan and his son Dr. Chris Hurdzan, from Hurdzan Golf Design (located in Columbus, Ohio) suggested the original concept because it fits so well with the Glenlaurel aura. As golf collectors, historians and traditionalists, Mike and Chris have advocated old time, low cost, simple golf courses and strongly believe that they can be just as much fun to play and memorable as their expensive counterparts. Although Hurdzan Golf has designed over 400 golf courses around the world, Glenlaurel is their first authentic sand green links-type golf course.

Nestled in the beautiful rolling hills and meadowlands on Glenlaurel’s Estate are eight links-style holes. The golfers experience will replicate that of Scottish golf from over 100 years ago, while playing on actual sand greens and tees and using original Hickory Shaft Clubs and sand tees.

Sand greens and tees will need no water, fertilizer, pesticides, or energy sources for their maintenance, which also fit with Glenlaurel’s approach to environmental stewardship, as well as what Hurdzan has championed for decades.

Navigating through the golf course, players will use golf balls that are designed to travel half the distance of today’s ball and mimic the rules of golf in that era…ever so enhancing the game as it was meant to be played a century ago. The gently rolling grass fairways and pasture grasses are accented by occasional old stone fence as found in Scotland. There are so many ways to play Glenlaurel Links that golfers will never tire of our unique Hocking Hills golf course. Course open May thru October weather permitting.
