We've noticed recently the amount of deer are dwindling and are not as visible as they usually are. We can count on them like clock work during dinner time - feeding themselves from the bird feeders by the Glasgow Dining Room and the feeders off the Grand Deck. Guests get a real kick out of this sight and we never get tired of it either! Who would think to see a deer poking its head in a bird feeder? Well, we sure miss this nightly sight and found out why we haven't seen the "Glenlaurel" deer lately.
About a week ago (very late) David, our maintenance manager, saw a few coyotes roaming on the estate. Not to worry though because coyotes are good for the ecosystem. Or so, we've read. The coyote was not an original native to Ohio, although they are now in all 88 counties. They prefer wooded areas near water sources and will stick around where there is an abundant supply of food. Coyotes are nocturnal and conduct their hunting, in pairs, after dusk.
Don't know about you, bu we can't wait for the coyotes to move on so we can view our precious deer again! They add so much character and wildlife is supposed to be abundant on Glenlaurel's Estate.
The Scottish Links at Glenlaurel is a very rustic course capturing the topography of the Scottish turf as it was played over a century ago. Don’t expect the lush greens and manicured fairways or the shinning golf cart waiting for your arrival. But do except to live out a dream of playing golf as it was in its infancy along with all the imperfections it had in those times.
As you roam through each of the holes with 4 original hickory shaft clubs in your hand along with a sand tee mold in your pocket, you will be lost for the 90 minutes in the remarkable history of golf. Our golf balls which are included will match the distances of the golf balls in that era. Our score cards denote the yardage for each hole identifying the hole by a name rather than a "hole" number and also provide a stymie line on the score card to assure you a 6 inch stime rule. We know it will be a little work to smooth out the sand green after each hole is played to assure the next golfers a smooth surface, but it does replicate the way it used to be.

So that our guests can learn a little about the staff at Glenlaurel, we'd like to spotlight one employee each month. This month, Becky Russell is our "featured" employee.
For the past five + years, Becky Russell has performed a multitude of roles at Glenlaurel. She started as a server in the dining room, then worked in the office assisting guests, and has also helped in the office with marketing, accounting, and various office tasks. She has even been a housekeeping steward at one point too! Becky handles our group reservations and most recently, she has expressed interest as a reservationist. Becky lives nearby and is the mother of two and loves to see guests sitting in the swing located in front of the Manor House. Stop by to say "hello" to Becky while staying at our luxurious Hocking Hills accommodations; she will make you feel most welcome.
Even though our Hocking Hills golf course is not finished, a guest recently stayed and couldn't resist the urge to try out some of the links...knickers and old clubs to boot!
The heather grass really adds a lot of character to the beautiful setting. Guest Jim had the following to say:
"I "played" my way around late Wednesday afternoon. I couldn't help myself. I didn't use the sand tees and tried to avoid the greens. I only had my mashie and my mashie niblick. I hit the first one right to the middle of the green. Wow, it could have been a hole in one! On the second hole I pushed my shot to the right in the grass and lost my ball. Luckily, I had another one and was able to keep it the rest of the way. Five and six are definitely difficult and I flew the green on 8 with my Mashie. 8 is a great finishing hole."
As you can see, this is going to be exciting and fun, the way golf was meant to be played. We will be adding more updates about the course so check back frequently.

Hello to all the morel mushroom hunters - it’s that time of year again…time to search for the great morel! Spring brings the perfect weather for these delightful shrooms. I'm not a fan of shrooms, especailly the crazy-looking "morels" that everyone goes wild for. I went on a quick hunt and like many, I found ONE! Yep, I found one on my first hunt. Not bad for someone who doesn't even like the taste, look, or smell of a morel. Not bad for a first time morel hunter. Like most who hunt for morels, I'm not disclosing my location either. So, happy hunting and I hope you enjoy this cool, damp spring and find lots of morels while visiting our Hocking Hills bed and breakfast. Make sure to make your reservation for a morel-getaway and hunt to your hearts delight!
